If you're running the fonts diagonally or otherwise not on the pixel grid, pixel hinting all gets thrown out the window. It's ugly but more readable. I haven't found anyone that finds numerical data at 12px to be easier to read with Segoe UI. When you take Segoe to 13px and beyond, numbers really start to look odd.
